The ZAL Port advances in its sustainability strategies with the new selective collection islands

Barcelona, 2nd September 2024 – In an effort to promote sustainability and improve the environmental management of waste generated in the ZAL Port, following the new tender for waste management services in ZAL Port (BCN) and ZAL Port (Prat), it has successfully implemented new “selective collection islands” in its logistics area.

The aim of these new islands is to make it easier for tenant companies to better segregate and manage their waste. Thanks to this initiative, so far in 2024 and compared to the same period in 2023, there has been an increase of more than 80% in paper and cardboard waste and more than 200% in plastic waste collected and managed selectively. These improvements have also meant that, despite the increase in activity in the ZAL Prat, the amount of non-segregated waste collected (waste that is deposited in a non-segregated manner) is being reduced, which in recent years had a clearly upward trend.

This achievement has been possible thanks to the collaboration and commitment of the tenant companies of ZAL Port (BCN) and ZAL Port (Prat), which have valued this initiative very positively and have actively collaborated by implementing these separation and recycling practices in their activities to contribute to the smooth operation of the service. Therefore, we consider that this success is a reflection of the spirit of community and environmental responsibility that our companies share with our objectives of excellence to make ZAL Port a benchmark in the management of logistics areas.

Despite the good results, there are still some occasional problems with the correct segregation of waste in certain containers, so it is essential to continue working together and to have the ongoing collaboration of all user companies to ensure that the objective of efficient and sustainable waste management is fully met.

This project is a clear example of the ZAL Port’s ongoing commitment to promoting environmental initiatives that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The implementation of these selective collection islands not only improves waste management, but also represents a significant step towards the environmental sustainability of the logistics area.

Looking to the future, CILSA plans to continue to introduce improvements that maximize waste recovery and optimize environmental management. These efforts reflect our dedication to creating a more sustainable and efficient environment for all companies operating in our industrial zone.

As expected, CILSA would like to thank all tenant companies for their cooperation and ongoing commitment to sustainability. Together, we continue to build a greener and more responsible future for our community and our environment.

ZAL Port is the leading logistics area in Barcelona and Europe, noted for its innovation and commitment to sustainability.
