CILSA AND MAERSK SIGN AN AGREEMENT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW 8,168 SQM WAREHOUSE AT THE ZAL PORT

MAERSK, world leader in maritime transport of goods and logistics services with a presence in 130 countries, and CILSA, the company that manages the ZAL of the Port of Barcelona, have signed a new contract for the construction of 7,710 sqm of warehouse and 458 sqm of office that will be delivered in 1Q 2022.

Both companies signed an agreement in December 2020 for the turnkey construction of a new logistics warehouse of 8,168 sqm that will be certified under the LEED standard with Gold category, in the plot A 30 of the ZAL Port (Prat) of 14,409 sqm. This is a very important milestone in both MAERSK and CILSA’s strategies, being for MAERSK its first implementation of a warehouse in Spain within the Port of Barcelona and for CILSA the latest development that completes all the land available in the ZAL Port.

The new MAERSK warehouse will be equipped with the most modern technology for the logistics activity, offering consolidation and deconsolidation services to all clients in the different sectors of activity who need it. The warehouse will have a free height under the girder of the facility with 11.00 m free in the storage area, 39 loading docks with automatic sectional doors and exterior shelters.

Its construction will follow the strictest criteria of energy efficiency and sustainability dictated by the LEED GOLD of the US Green Building Council and an integrated building management system will be implemented to control artificial lighting using dimmable low-consumption LEDs and natural lighting exceeds 5% of the surface free of skylights. The office block will be adapted to allow full access for the disabled.

This new warehouse responds to the development of Maersk as a global logistics integrator, increasing the End-to-End offer of logistics solutions available to all companies regardless of their size or sector of activity, with special focus on the deconsolidation of imported goods for their subsequent distribution both in the Iberian Peninsula and in the South of France, under the area of influence of the Port of Barcelona.

The delivery of this new warehouse is part of all the new construction projects that CILSA is developing at the moment and that add a new surface area in the ZAL Port of more than 270,000 sqm of logistics, configuring a Logistics Park with more than 920,000 sqm of constructed first level logistics warehouses once they have been completed.

José Antonio González Paz, South West Europe & Maghreb Product Manager Contract Logistics of MAERSK has highlighted: “With this new investment, MAERSK consolidates itself as the reference provider of comprehensive logistics services for our clients, with a focus on Deconsolidation services of cargo from importation flows that use the logistics infrastructures of Barcelona (Port, Airport, Intermodal Transport) as an entry point to both the Iberian Peninsula and the South of France markets. We offer operational flexibility and optimization of transport and handling costs as we can condition the goods for their efficient reception both in their Distribution Centers and in direct deliveries to their final Customers “

On his part, Alfonso Martínez, CEO of CILSA has indicated: “For CILSA it is a turning point at all levels: the new contract with MAERSK, the world’s leading shipping company, represents a very important change in the freight forwarder-logistics sector and the culmination and raison d’être of a project such as the ZAL Port, having completed the entire development of the available land and with sustained occupations of 96-98% during the last years. Being MAERSK’s logistics infrastructure partner in Barcelona is a huge satisfaction and a professional challenge to be up to the task of such an important client, making the need to continue growing into an obligation to respond to the needs of our clients, confirming the ZAL Port as a model in the logistics market of Barcelona ”.
